Chapter Nine
THAT NIGHT, when the moon hangs over the sky, I sneak out of my room with the sack of Fairy Dream in my hand and Fairy’s Awakening hanging down from my waist. As soon as the guard standing outside my room turns in response to my opening the door, I sprinkle a pinch of Fairy Dream at his face.
I hold my breath as I watch him, ready to silence him with a spell if he calls out for help. The guard sways a little before he collapses to the floor.
After waiting for a moment to make sure he won’t get up or open his eyes, I pick up my dress and step over him. Walking on tiptoes, I make my way to the fairy dungeon using the meager light of the moon through the windows.
The wooden door leading to the dungeon creaks when I blast the lock and push it open. I wince at all the sounds I make.
“Who’s there?” someone behind the door asks.
I don’t give him the chance to attack. The moment I see him, I throw a handful of Fairy Dream in the faces of the half dozen guards behind the door.
I beam when all of them fall into a heap. This is easier than I expected.
I make my way into the dungeon, throwing Fairy Dream at everyone I see along the way. When I reach the larger part of the dungeon, I use a wind spell to send Fairy Dream to all the prisoners and guards.
My heart pounds as I clutch the sack of Fairy Dream in one hand and my staff in the other. Keldrin, Razen, Xander, and Princess Salvene are in their individual cells, fast asleep either from the toll of the day or my Fairy Dream.
I walk to Keldrin’s cell and gaze down at him. He’s leaning against the wall with one leg stretched out and the other drawn up. His hand rests on a knee, and his thick eyebrows furrow together even in sleep.
I drink in every inch of his handsome face until someone’s snore startles me from my trance.
Right. I have to get them out of here. Now.
Reaching into the sack of Fairy’s Awakening, I sprinkle some on Keldrin and watch him flutter his eyes open.
“Adri.” He blinks as though trying to decide if I’m real. “Am I dreaming?”
“No.” I force the word out of my mouth and turn to wake up the others. If I continue to gaze at him, I might do or say something without thinking.
Xander doesn’t say anything when he wakes up to find me outside his cell. If he has any reaction, I didn’t see it.
“Thanks, Adriana. I owe you one for today.” Razen’s silver eyes scan across the dungeon.
The last person I wake up is Princess Salvene. After she opens her eyes, she stands to her full height upon seeing me. “I know you’re involved with the fairies. Did you ask them to catch all of us?”
“Would I come here to free you if I did?” I ask.
